Current thesis

The WFE/AI-memory capex trade that ran Lam +119% YTD into June has rolled into a group-wide correction — the worst month for chip stocks since 2008, memory momentum broken (Micron/SanDisk). The ~2026-07-29 FQ4 print is now the binary: it either re-accelerates the WFE order narrative or unwinds the mid-50x re-rating. A fresh entry means paying up into a broken tape days ahead of that binary.

Invalidation trigger

A weekly close below $330 loses the rising 20-week EMA and the post-Micron breakout base; a 2026 WFE guide cut below ~$135B on a DRAM/NAND pricing rollover, or the theme flipping to saturated, then confirms the order-book break.

Current Thesis

The 2026-07-29 print settled the fundamentals and left the tape one open question: whether the +17.98% gap on 2026-07-30 was a single-session reprice or the front of a re-rate. Three sessions of $293–298 gave no answer. The fourth did. On 2026-08-04 LRCX closed $317.74, +7.85%, on 15.66M shares against an 11.84M average — the first close back above the 20-day, now $313.60, since the July break. The 50-day at $338.28 is the next line overhead, and the close sits 27.5% under the 52-week high of $438.50.

The extension came from outside the company. SOXX gained 16.8% across the four sessions through 2026-08-04, its best four-day run since March 2020, immediately after a July in which it fell 21% — the index's worst month since December 2002. Marvell added 35% over that window, Applied Materials 25%, Micron 21.8%; Lam's +25.9% off the 2026-07-29 close of $252.35 sits mid-pack.

The proximate cause is traceable. At its 2026-07-30 print Amazon raised FY2026 cash capex to roughly $220B from about $200B and named higher memory costs as part of the reason, alongside AWS revenue growing 36.7% YoY, its fastest in eighteen quarters. Andy Jassy said $220B still will not cover 2026 demand and that 2027 capacity is largely reserved. A hyperscaler enlarging its capital budget because memory got more expensive routes spending into DRAM and NAND capacity — the corner of wafer-fab equipment where Lam's etch and deposition share is highest, and the segment that carried the June quarter.

What remains unsettled is the size of the 2026 bar. SEMI's mid-year forecast of 2026-07-15 puts wafer fab equipment at $143.9B. Lam's call, two weeks later, was the low $150B range. Applied Materials reports 2026-08-13 — the first outside vote, and nothing company-specific from Lam arrives before roughly late October.

Bullish and bearish views on Lam Research Corporation

The model's bull view on Lam Research Corporation (LRCX), in brief: FQ4 FY26 (2026-07-29): revenue $6.72B, +30% YoY, a fourth consecutive record; gross margin 52.0%, a twenty-year high; diluted EPS $1.82 against $1.68 consensus. The bear view: The 50-day at $338.28 has not been reclaimed, and the 2026-08-04 close of $317.74 remains 27.5% below the 52-week high of $438.50 set before the July break. Both cases follow in full.

Bull Case

  • FQ4 FY26 (2026-07-29): revenue $6.72B, +30% YoY, a fourth consecutive record; gross margin 52.0%, a twenty-year high; diluted EPS $1.82 against $1.68 consensus.
  • The September quarter is guided to $8.1B ±$400M and EPS $2.15 ±$0.15 versus consensus near $7.09B and $1.83 — the arithmetic behind a 33.59 forward multiple against 55.16 trailing at the 2026-08-04 close.
  • Amazon took FY2026 cash capex to ~$220B from ~$200B on 2026-07-30, citing higher memory costs among the drivers. A capex budget raised because of memory pricing converts directly into memory capacity demand.
  • BofA's Vivek Arya set 2027 global cloud capex at $1.18T on 2026-08-04, with hyperscaler spend topping $1.2T over the next twelve months against roughly $700B currently. Alphabet, Amazon, Microsoft and Meta have guided about $725B combined for 2026.
  • SEMI's 2026-07-15 mid-year forecast independently puts 2026 WFE up 23.1% to $143.9B inside a $165.9B total equipment market — direction corroborated by a body with no stock to sell.
  • CSBG installed-base services were $2.47B of the $6.72B June quarter, +43% YoY — the recurring layer that keeps billing when system order timing slips.
  • Short interest is 29.52M shares, 2.36% of shares outstanding, 2.11 days to cover as of 2026-08-04. Whatever drove the four-day move, a short base did not.

Bear Case

  • The 50-day at $338.28 has not been reclaimed, and the 2026-08-04 close of $317.74 remains 27.5% below the 52-week high of $438.50 set before the July break.
  • The move was group beta at 1.80, not company news. The drivers between 2026-07-31 and 2026-08-04 were Amazon's capex raise and a BofA cloud-spend revision; the stock did what SOXX did, with amplitude.
  • BofA's nine Buy-rated semiconductor names on 2026-08-04 include Applied Materials and KLA — not Lam. The equipment bid in that particular note is routed through the peers.
  • Sell-side dispersion is unresolved. Evercore ISI's 2026-07-30 cut to $275 sits 13.4% below the 2026-08-04 close; Deutsche Bank went to $320, Wells Fargo and B. Riley to $350, Morgan Stanley to $367, while Cantor held $500 and Oppenheimer $400. Across 35 analysts: $368.13 average, $500 high, $290 low.
  • Memory price increases are converging. TrendForce (2026-07-03) sees 3Q26 conventional DRAM contract prices +13–18% QoQ and NAND +10–15%, down from roughly 60% DRAM gains in 2Q26, and expects 4Q26 increases to narrow further under weak end demand and elevated inventory.
  • SOXX drew a record $6.9B of net inflows during July — the month it fell 21%. Money went in on the way down, so the marginal buyer of the four-day bounce may already be positioned.
  • Nothing company-specific until roughly 2026-10-21. Eleven weeks of trading on peer prints and sector flow.

Setup & Price Structure

Six sessions took the stock down 52.86 points and back up 65.39, for a net gain of 4.1%. From the 2026-07-24 close of $305.21 it fell 17.3% into the print — 7/27 -4.46%, 7/28 -7.54%, 7/29 -6.40% — closing at $252.35 hours before results. It then gapped to $297.72 (+17.98%, 22.09M shares), stalled at $293.02 and $294.61, and broke out to $317.74 on 2026-08-04.

Against that: 20-day $313.60, 50-day $338.28, 100-day $296.09, 200-day $242.72, all measured off the 2026-08-04 close. Price sits 1.3% above the 20-day, 6.1% below the 50-day, and 30.9% above the 200-day. Year to date, +85.62%.

The three-session shelf at $293.02–$297.72 is the base the breakout was built on, and the 100-day runs through it at $296.09 — one level carrying two reasons to matter. Volume has been rising with price: 15.66M shares on 2026-08-04 versus 9.97M on 8/3. Market cap $397.58B, EV/EBITDA 45.80, price/sales 17.11.

Catalyst Calendar (next 30 days)

  • ~2026-08-10 (est.) — TSMC July monthly revenue. Taiwan listing rules require publication by the 10th of the following month. The highest-frequency public read on leading-edge foundry run-rate, feeding the logic half of the WFE bar.
  • 2026-08-13 — Applied Materials FQ3 FY26 results and call, 4:30pm ET; date confirmed 2026-07-23. AMAT guided the July quarter to $8.95B ±$500M and EPS $3.36 ±$0.20. Its October guide and its own industry view are where SEMI's $143.9B and Lam's low-$150B get arbitrated.
  • ~2026-08-20 (est.) — SEMI North America billings report for July, published roughly three weeks after month close. The monthly billings run-rate for North American headquartered equipment makers.
  • 2026-08-26 — Nvidia FQ2 FY27 results. Tests whether AI-capex enthusiasm keeps broadening down the supply chain toward equipment or re-concentrates at the compute layer.

What Would Change Our Mind

Applied Materials on 2026-08-13 is the specific event. If it guides the October quarter below the run-rate implied by its own $8.95B ±$500M July frame, or leaves its industry WFE view at or below SEMI's $143.9B rather than moving toward the low-$150B number, the arbitration resolves against the higher bar and Lam's $8.1B ±$400M September guide reads as share gain inside a smaller pie.

On price, a daily close below $293 gives back the post-print base: $293.02 on 2026-07-31 was the closing floor of the four-session recovery, and the 100-day runs at $296.09 through the same shelf. Losing it reopens the gap toward $252.35 and dates the 2026-08-04 breakout as a failed one.

A memory reversal would break the input before it ever touches the price. TrendForce guiding 4Q26 contract prices flat-to-down after the 3Q26 path of +13–18% DRAM and +10–15% NAND, or a memory maker cutting capex at its next print, removes DRAM/NAND equipment orders months before they would have shown in reported revenue.

Finally, if the theme flips to saturated — hyperscalers raising capex while the equipment group falls anyway, the sequence that followed Alphabet's 2026-07-28 raise — then rising estimates stop lifting the price and July's de-rating was structural rather than a drawdown.

Correlation Notes

Beta is 1.80 over five years, and the last two weeks were an unusually clean demonstration of it: a 17.3% decline into the print with no company news, then +25.9% over four sessions inside a SOXX move of +16.8%.

The tightest read-across is Applied Materials, up 25% over the same four sessions and reporting first on 2026-08-13. The two names are the market's paired proxy for wafer-fab equipment, and AMAT's October guide sets Lam's tape for weeks.

Upstream sits memory. Micron added 21.8% over the four sessions, and Amazon's capex raise was in part a memory-cost story. Lam's NAND and etch exposure means DRAM and NAND capex decisions lead its bookings; TrendForce's quarterly contract-price path is the earliest public marker of that turn.

Above both is hyperscaler capex, and its transmission is not reliably positive. Alphabet raised its 2026 outlook on 2026-07-28 and the group fell, the sequence that opened July's 21% SOXX decline. Amazon raised on 2026-07-30 and the group rose 16.8% in four days. The same input produced opposite outputs eight sessions apart, which makes the equipment names levered to the market's willingness to fund AI capex — a different variable from the capex itself.

On the logic side, TSMC's monthly revenue release, due by the 10th of each month, is the highest-frequency public data point between Lam prints; SEMI's North America billings series, roughly three weeks after month close, is the aggregate equipment run-rate.

Notes

  • Fiscal year ends late June. FQ1 FY27 reports ~late October 2026, and no company-specific catalyst falls between early August and then.
  • A 10-for-1 stock split took effect in October 2024 — every per-share level referenced here is post-split.
  • China was 26% of June-quarter revenue (Taiwan 27%, Korea 20%). Export-control changes hit bookings before they appear in reported revenue.
  • The VEU exemption expired 2025-12-31; since 2026-01-01 TSMC, Samsung and SK Hynix run their China fabs on annual US licences, renewable on revisable terms.
  • Insider disposals run under Rule 10b5-1 plans — the 2026-07-13 director sale used a plan adopted 2026-03-11 — so the timing of individual sales is set months ahead.
  • CSBG installed-base services were $2.47B of the $6.72B June quarter, a recurring layer that partly damps system-order cyclicality.
