Current thesis

SolarWinds-spinoff MSP software vendor pivoting to cybersecurity via Adlumin MDR (26.7% of rev, +17.5% YoY); the cyber/MDR theme is accelerating but NABL's own tape is broken — ~40% off, ~$4.77 near the $2.92 base low after a soft Q2 guide. Optically cheap (~1.6x sales) but rolled over: a value-trap laggard until it bases and reclaims ~$5.50. The 2026-08-06 Q2 print is the binary.

Invalidation trigger

A weekly close below $2.92 undercuts the 52-week base low and confirms a fresh breakdown; secondarily, a Q2 print (2026-08-06) that cuts the FY26 ARR guide below $580M or shows cyber growth decelerating into low-double-digits kills the re-rating thesis.

Current Thesis

N-able is a SolarWinds spinoff (July 2021) selling remote monitoring/management (RMM), cloud backup, and — since the ~$266M Adlumin acquisition closed November 2024 — cybersecurity (MDR/SIEM) to managed service providers. The tradable question is whether the cyber line re-accelerates the whole company. It doesn't yet show up in price: Adlumin is now 26.7% of revenue and the fastest-growing segment (+17.5% YoY, Q1 reported 2026-05-13), but the Q2 guide of $137.5–138.5M (~5–6% YoY) landed well below the ~$144.7M consensus, the stock fell ~11.5% on the print, and it now trades ~$4.77 (2026-07-17) inside a 52-week range of $2.92–$9.04 with market cap down ~40% to ~$898M. The broad cybersecurity/MDR theme is accelerating; NABL's own price structure is rolled over and basing near multi-year lows. This is a cheap-but-broken laggard read — roughly 1.6x FY26 sales and mid-single-digit EV/EBITDA on a $167–171M FY26 adjusted-EBITDA guide — the value-trap signature the momentum playbook is built to sidestep, not a fresh momentum entry.

Bullish and bearish views on N-able, Inc.

The model's bull view on N-able, Inc. (NABL), in brief: Cybersecurity (Adlumin) grew +17.5% YoY and reached 26.7% of Q1 2026 revenue (reported 2026-05-13) — the fastest-growing line, a second-order MDR engine attaching into an installed MSP base. The bear view: Q2 2026 revenue guide $137.5–138.5M (~5–6% YoY) versus ~$144.7M consensus (2026-05-13) is the core problem: top-line deceleration from Q1's +13.1%, and the market punished it ~11.5% same day. Both cases follow in full.

Bull Case

  • Cybersecurity (Adlumin) grew +17.5% YoY and reached 26.7% of Q1 2026 revenue (reported 2026-05-13) — the fastest-growing line, a second-order MDR engine attaching into an installed MSP base.
  • ARR of $548.0M, +11.2% YoY (Q1 2026); customers with >$50K ARR grew to 2,710 and now represent 62% of ARR — mix-shift toward higher-value accounts.
  • Profitable and self-funding: Q1 2026 adjusted EBITDA $36.7M (27.5% margin), operating income $12.5M vs $1.8M a year earlier; FY26 guide $167–171M EBITDA against a ~$898M cap.
  • The $100K cyber warranty on Adlumin MDR (highlighted at Empower 2026, May 2026) differentiates versus ConnectWise/Kaseya in a market where MSPs are closing cyber-insurance gaps.
  • Valuation floor: FY26 revenue guide $554–559M puts the name near 1.6x sales; analyst targets cluster above spot (BMO $5.50, Needham $6.50, consensus ~$6.85) — asymmetric IF the cyber line re-rates the multiple.

Bear Case

  • Q2 2026 revenue guide $137.5–138.5M (~5–6% YoY) versus ~$144.7M consensus (2026-05-13) is the core problem: top-line deceleration from Q1's +13.1%, and the market punished it ~11.5% same day.
  • Legacy RMM/backup (roughly three-quarters of revenue) is low-growth, and cyber can't yet offset it without cost — gross margin slipped in Q1 2026.
  • Adlumin leverage bites: $7.6M net interest expense drove a $0.6M net loss in Q1 2026 despite positive operating income, capping buyback optionality and raising rate sensitivity.
  • Sell-side is de-rating, not upgrading: Needham cut its target $8.00→$6.50 and BMO $9.50→$5.50 after the print (May 2026), both citing timing/product concerns.
  • Price down ~40% in market cap over six months and pinned near the 52-week low of $2.92 — no accelerating structure; cheap multiple plus dead tape is the classic value trap.

Setup & Price Structure

  • Spot ~$4.77 (2026-07-17); 52-week range $2.92–$9.04; the stock sits in the lower-middle of that band after gapping down from the ~$5.50 shelf on the 2026-05-13 print.
  • $2.92 is the base low and the level a bounce would have to hold; the ~$5.50 gap shelf (also BMO's target) is the first overhead resistance to reclaim.
  • Trading below declining moving averages with no higher-low sequence established — a basing/repair pattern, not a breakout. There is no momentum leg to ride here.
  • The constructive path is a higher low above $2.92 followed by a weekly reclaim of ~$5.50 on volume; absent that, fresh entries are premature and the correct stance is to stand aside until it bases.

Catalyst Calendar (next 30 days)

  • Cyber-segment growth rate (last read +17.5% YoY, Q1 2026) — the single number that either re-rates the multiple or confirms the stall; disclosed on the Aug 6 call.
  • AI-security partnership/monetization updates flagged at Empower 2026 (May 2026) — dates TBD, but concrete revenue attach would be the catalyst the sell-side says it is waiting for.

Elapsed catalysts

  • ~2026-08-06 (est.): Q2 2026 earnings — the binary. Watch whether revenue clears the light $137.5–138.5M guide and, more importantly, whether the FY26 ARR guide ($581–586M) holds or gets cut. (passed 3d ago)

What Would Change Our Mind

  • Bull flip: a weekly close back above ~$5.50 that reclaims the post-Q1 gap shelf, paired with an Aug 6 print showing cyber sustaining >15% growth and an FY26 ARR guide raise — that turns a laggard into a base-and-breakout worth sizing.
  • Bear confirm: a weekly close below $2.92 undercuts the 52-week base low and signals a fresh structural breakdown, keeping capital out.
  • Fundamental break: an FY26 ARR guide cut below $580M or cyber growth decelerating into low-double-digits on Aug 6 would mean the second-order engine is stalling and the re-rating thesis is dead.

Correlation Notes

  • MSP-tooling comps ConnectWise, Kaseya (owner of Datto), NinjaOne and Atera are private; NABL is the main public proxy for MSP software demand, so its tape moves on channel commentary rather than a listed peer group.
  • Cyber/MDR leaders (CRWD, S/SentinelOne) trade at multiples several times NABL's; a strong cyber-theme bid can pull the name sympathetically, but NABL persistently lags the group and is not a substitute for it.
  • SolarWinds (SWI), its former parent, was taken private in 2025 (Turn/River Capital), removing the closest lineage comp from the tape.
  • As a leveraged, decelerating small-cap SaaS name, NABL carries high beta to small-cap software sentiment and rates — it de-rates faster than the group in risk-off and needs a company-specific catalyst to decouple.

Notes

  • Earnings blackout / binary: Q2 2026 print ~2026-08-06 — no fresh entries into the print given the leverage and post-Q1 deceleration risk.
  • Cyber pivot anchor: Adlumin (MDR/SIEM for MSPs) acquired ~$266M, closed Nov 2024; now 26.7% of revenue and the fastest-growing line (+17.5% YoY Q1 2026).
  • Value-trap flag: optically cheap (~1.6x FY26 sales, mid-single-digit EV/EBITDA) but price structure is broken near 52-week low $2.92 — cheap multiple + dead tape, not a momentum setup.
  • Leverage watch: Adlumin debt drove $7.6M Q1 net interest expense and a $0.6M net loss despite $12.5M operating income; rate-sensitive small-cap.
  • Sell-side de-rating post-Q1: Needham $8.00→$6.50 (Buy), BMO $9.50→$5.50 (Market Perform); consensus Hold, avg PT ~$6.85.
  • Lineage: SolarWinds spinoff (July 2021); former parent SWI taken private by Turn/River Capital in 2025.
